Death Cab For Cutie (le nom provient du film des Beatles « Magical Mystery Tour ») était un projet solo du guitariste Ben Gibbard à qui l'on doit aussi l'excellent groupe The Postal Service dont le merveilleux titre « Such Great Heights » a tourné longtemps en boucle sur les ondes hertziennes. Il enregistre un premier album solo en 97 sous le nom de Death Cab For Cutie et reçoit tout de suite un accueil chaleureux (l'album en question "You Can Play These Songs With Chords" ressortira en 2002). Voyant que ça marche, il décide d'étendre le concept et d'en faire un groupe. Il recrute donc Christopher Walla à la guitare électrique, Nicholas Harmer à la basse et Nathan Good à la batterie et enregistre l'année d'après l'album « Something About Airplanes » pour le même label (Barsuk). Là encore, la presse musicale ne tarit pas d'éloges pour le groupe de Seattle. En 2003, le groupe change de batteur et sort « Transatlanticism » (dont certains morceaux serviront de BO pour la série Six Feet Under). Il faudra attendre 2005 pour que la bande à Gibbard signe chez Atlantic. C'est un groupe discret et intègre. Entre rock indé, electro et folk, il mérite d'être plus connu. On dirait du Travis (mais en mieux) et aussi du Royksopp (mais en carrément mieux). C'est de l'anti-folk version "West Coast".
